BAC Lightning Day

Saturday 10th August 2024
The Tangmere Lightning Day celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the first flight of the English Electric P.1A – forerunner
of the mighty Lightning interceptor – in August 1954.
Meet four of its former pilots and hear about their experiences flying the first and last all-British supersonic fighter!

Schedule of Events

10am. Museum opens. Refreshments may be purchased in The Cockpit Café.

The first Lightning talk commences at 10.30am in the Neville Duke Hall, by the main entrance to the car park.

The talks are scheduled to last for 45 minutes to allow about 15 minutes for questions.

  • 10.30 Trevor Macdonald-Bennett – ‘Lightnings in Singapore & Saudi Arabia’
  • 11.30 Ian Black – ‘Last of the Lightnings’
  • 12.30 BREAK – If desired, lunch may be purchased in The Cockpit Café.
  • 2pm Terry Carlton – ‘Ejecting from a Lightning when improperly dressed’
  • 3pm Chris Berners-Price – ‘The Lightning Attack Sequence’
  • 4pm End of Lightning Event
  • 5pm Museum Closes

• The Museum’s Lightning F.53 is displayed in the Meryl Hansed Memorial Hall and a Lightning Simulator
‘flight’ may be booked at Reception.
